password prompt
Not sure if it's just me, but when I try to login to this new site, I get a constant pop-up of the username password box (even though I enter the username and pass)....eventually I get in after putting in the username/password than hitting cancel on the next 2-3 pop-ups. I use Firefox (version 3), so maybe that is a factor? Anyone else having this issue?

Avatars
A quick recommendation on avatars.

One of the cool features about this site is that there are many different places where you are represented by your avatar... there is the contacts page (if you choose to be listed), the forums and your manager page.

In order to keep them synced up, I am going to setup a process for avatars... you can upload as many different images as you would like... I know that many of you switch avatars on a regular basis... by having this system in place it will allow you to only have to make a single change to keep all avatars in sync.

There will be an upload directory (to be named later) that you can upload all of the images that you need (Be aware, we have a 500Mb storage limit on this site... I will monitor and send reports from time to time if we get close).  In this directory, you can name the avatars whatever you please, with the exception of your current avatar which will need to be named teamname_current_avatar.jpg... for example, mine is thelizards_current_avatar.jpg and is currently my Zombie Hockey image.

This will allow me to reference a single file for the avatar no matter where it is.

This will all be contained in the managers guide (forthcoming), I just wanted to give you a heads up.

Managers Guide
I hope to have the managers guide completed this week to introduce everyone to the new site.

I am also going to add a FAQ that will be available on the site to help people as well.

At this point, all of the site features should be up and working... The forums and the managers page.  At this time, I have the only manager page... please provide feedback to the look/feel and items as this will be the template moving forward.

Thanks...

New Site, New Season, Payment Details, etc etc READ!!!

Welcome, Puck Hogs, to the new site. In our 7th year, we’ve been working hard (well, mostly Jimmy on the site dev, me making lists, and Scott drinking beer) this summer to get this new site up to speed. We still have a way to go but will get there. Jimmy will get you all the info you need to get logged in and post your avatar. If you have any questions, shoot him an email (see the “Contact Us” link).

I WILL NOT BE EMAILING YOU ANYMORE. YOU MUST CHECK THE MESSAGE BOARD PERIODICALLY FOR DETAILS ON THE LEAGUE. THE WHOLE POINT OF THIS IS TO BE AN ONLINE COMMUNITY THAT MATERIALIZES ONCE OR TWICE A YEAR INTO A DRUNKEN WEEKEND IN PERSON.

1. What we need to immediately do is. We will do this for you if you do not do so and it might be ugly:

  • Pick an avatar: you should be able to change it as the season goes on
  • Pick a team name: Would like this to be static on the board but you can still change your yahoo name as you’d like

2. MONEY MONEY MONEY: I need it. I will post a separate thread with the balances due as some people left in last year.

3. Sign up in Yahoo. Do it, see the other post on this message board with the league name

4. Rules: I’ll be posting the updated supplemental rules sheet soon. No major changes though there are some tweaks we are still working on.

5. Draft: Two weeks! See the yahoo league for details on that.

6. New Recruits: if you are new and have any questions about the league, let me know.

Payment Status DUE COB 9/12/08!!!
Here are the dues for this year after consulting the accounting books. This reflects leave-ins from last year so if you think our books are cooked and I forgot about the C-note you floated me at the craps table last year, let me know.

I need your payment by COB Friday 9/12 or else I will boot your ass and recruit someone else. No tickey no laundry. Actually, you've all generated good PHL242 FICO scores over the years so in true totalitarian fashion, I will selectively boot if you haven't paid by then.

Best way is to pay via paypal (send a couple extra bucks for paypal receiving charges) at acgrenier@gmail.com. If you plan to mail me a check, please email me for my mailing address and to let me know it's on the way. You can also include goony hockey cards to adorn The Bucket.

Draft Order
We will set the draft order early as we did last year. The reverse order was an idea last year which sounds good. We'll insert new teams in the holes made by last year's teams. I'll also do it NHL style and randomize the top 4 picks (#17-#20 last year) then everything will be reverse order after that.

And agree with Jame's suggstion that we'll use the PHL242 season, not NHL season stats. How does the NHL do it, does it do regular season or Stanley Cup playoffs finish?

I have some other setup stuff on the list I'll address later (the UTIL for F idea also from James so D can play in F slots).

I also fixed the PPG points which was missing.

So far it's the Jimmy/James/McV/Adrian board, where are all these other fuckaz?

New site guide
I will try to have the new site guide completed this weekend... most of the critical work on the site is done, now am just cleaning up tidbits and looking for little enhancements (like closing out some of the white space) and size issues... so I will focus on the user guide, some key items included will be...

1) How to post avatars
2) How to perosnalize my manager page
3) How to upload pictures (my goal is to have multiple pictures displayed on the site in the white spaces and have them randomly rotate)

Anything you have questions on... let me know

Error Message on 2008-09 Season Page
Just to be pre-emptive... we are aware of the error message on the season page.

This technically shouldn't be appearing as the league is set as a public league which means that anyone can browse to it and see it... I have tested this with some other public leagues and it appears to be fine... but for some reason we get the message.

Will continue to work on it...

The work around is... log into Yahoo and then come to this site.. as long as you don't close your browser you can view/interact with both...

The drawback is that the masses outside of PHL can't see our stats when the season starts... part of the draw of doing this... so we will see what comes of it.

Official League Subtitle
For our site, on the main page I want to include a subtitle that kinda describes our ethos. For now I've chosen

"Celebrating the seedy underbelly of fantasy hockey since 2001"

Please suggest something better and let's vote and procede with that.

Playoffs Setting: Request Feedback
Every since we've done our kickass playoff system, we've had a week for every playoff round: Monday through Sunday. We may have chatted about this, but is there any interest in increase the length of the playoff week from 7 to 10 days? This wouldn't give us nice and tight weeks but it would allow for a bit more playoff drama. And it would reduce the chance of getting stuck with one of your stars only playing 2 games in a week. But again, these are the breaks so maybe it's fun. I'll keep it as is unless I hear a groundswell to change it

Current settings:
  • Regular Season: Oct 4, 2008 – Mar 22, 2008 (Feb 26, 2008: Trade Deadline)
  • Quarterfinals : Mar 23-Mar 29, 2009
  • Semifinals: Mar 30 – Apr 5, 2009
  • Finals: Apr 6 – April 12, 2009

Supplemental Rules Sheet 2008-2009
Below is the supplemental rule sheet for this year. Jimmy will post it elsewhere on the site but just wanted to bring it to your attention. We actually do have the trade deadline locked in at about 3.5 weeks before our playoffs begin. I might change the payouts slightly based on a few admin things (cost of this SPS site that Jimmy sucked up and Bucket upgrade costs). Nothing earthshattering either way. The only significant addition is at the very end which Mike, you'll, enjoy :)

League Composition:

  1. # Teams: We will have a 20 team league
  2. League Type: Our league will have a points based regular season and a head to head (H2H) playoff system. Season will commence as a points based league with the following schedule:

§         Regular Season: Oct 4, 2008 – Mar 22, 2008 (Feb 26, 2008: Trade Deadline)

§         Quarterfinals : Mar 23-Mar 29, 2009

§         Semifinals: Mar 30 – Apr 5, 2009

§         Finals: Apr 6 – April 12, 2009

Playoffs:

  1. Main Bracket Seeding: Top eight teams will qualify for the playoffs (Winner’s Bracket):

§         Quarterfinals (First Round)

·         1 vs 8

·         2 vs 7

·         3 vs 6

·         4 vs 5

§         Semi-finals (Second Round). Note, teams will not reseed in semi-finals, brackets are fixed.

·         Winner 1/8 vs Winner 4/5

·         Winner 2/7 vs Winner 3/6

§         Finals: Remaining two teams

§         3rd Place: Winner of semi-final losers

§         Final finishing order of playoff bracket losers will be based on total points in that round.

  1. Toilet Bowl Seeding: Second eight teams (#9-#16) will qualify for the playoffs (Consolation (Toilet Bowl) Bracket)

§         Quarterfinals (First Round)

·         9 vs 16

·         10 vs 15

·         11 vs 14

·         12 vs 13

§         Semi-finals (Second Round). Note, teams will not reseed in semi-finals, brackets are fixed.

·         Winner 9/16 vs Winner 12/13

·         Winner 10/15 vs Winner 11/14

§         Finals: Remaining two teams

§         Final finishing order of playoff bracket losers will be based on total points in that round.

  1. Points Tracking: As we will be a points based league in YFH for the entire season, we must track playoff brackets manually. We will post the brackets on the PHL242 Message Board. Yahoo will continue to track the scoring but we will note each team’s points at the beginning of that playoff week and subtract that beginning total from the week end total to get the true total for that week. We will compare the two teams playing head to head in that playoff round to determine that week’s winner. Example

§         Team 1 begins the first round (totals at the end of regular season) with 20,000 points and ends the first round (totals after last day of playoffs) with 20, 850 points. Team 1’s true Playoff Round 1 total is 850 points

§         Team 8 begins the first round (totals at the end of regular season) with 18,000 points and ends the first round (totals after last day of playoffs) with 18, 800 points. Team 1’s true Playoff Round 1 total is 800 points

§         Team 1 is declared the winner of that bracket by a score of 850 to 800.

§         We will continue the same system for all rounds using the previous rounds’ ending totals as the next round’s beginning totals

§         Note: yahoo will continue to keep track of all scoring; we will just handle this manual handicapping on the message board.

§         Drop/Adds: All drop/add rules will continue to apply during playoffs

§         Trades: Trading deadline will have passed so there will be no trades during playoffs

§         Commish will lock out all drop/add ability for all teams eliminated from playoffs. The only playoff losers allowed to continue drop/adds are those competing for the #3 position during the finals week. This rule is to prevent eliminated teams from affecting contending teams via drop/adds. All teams may drop/add throughout the playoffs subject to their drop/add limit as managed by yahoo.

  1. Yahoo stat adjustments: Yahoo makes stat corrections weekly and these may impact the team the winning team of a playoff series.

§         If the margin of victory is greater than 100 points, the current winner shall be declared permanent and all playoff rules shall be followed.

§         If the margin is less than 100 points, both teams shall be allowed to continue playing in the playoffs subject to normal playoff rules until confirmation of stats on the following week’s cycle,

§         Upon confirmation of stats during yahoo’s next cycle, the winner of the previous round shall be the team competing in the following round just completed.

Team Composition/Scoring Categories/Scoring Points Modifiers/Waivers/Max Games

Please see the specific PHL242 rules in Yahoo and Yahoo’s generic fantasy hockey rules. Specific amendments follow:

  1. I will do a one-time reset of all manager’s drop/add’s to zero on October 3, 2008.
  2. Teams will have 25 drop/adds for the regular season. These moves are “use/lose” moves for the regular season. Commish will manually do the drop/add reset.
  3. During playoffs, each team will have 3 drop/adds per playoff round. These moves will be “use/lose” for every playoff round.  Commish will manually do the drop/add reset.

Draft:  Our league will have a live draft on Saturday September 20, 2008 at 12pm PDT. See the PHL242 league in Yahoo for details on live draft participation. Managers may elect to pre-rank players and not participate in the live draft as needed.

League Entry Fee

  1. $75 will be this year’s entry fee.
  2. Please mail me a check or you may paypal me. If you choose paypal please add $2 for receiving fees. Currency is USD.
  3. Please email me for a mailing address if you intend to pay by check:

Prizes

Prize schedule will be as follows. Note all, regular season awards (1%) only apply the PHL242 regular season, not the NHL regular season:

Trophies

All trophies travel COD. Current holder and future holder of the each trophy must make arrangements for transfer. For those trophies that don’t exist yet. Commish and winner will arrange for transportation.

The Bucket: Every winner of The Bucket will remove one “Asshole’s” hockey card from The Bucket to keep as a memento and add a new “Asshole” at their discretion. Winner must abide by the “9 Rules of The Bucket” posted inside.

Trades:

  1. Managers are free to offer and make trades as explained in the Yahoo rules.
  2. Anyone who wishes to protest a trade must publicly do so on the message board. All players may comment on the issue and/or begin a poll on the message board. Trades can be vetoed by a majority vote by the Trade Jury.
    1. Trade Jury is composed of Adrian (Commish), Ralph, and McVeigh. Vote of the Trade Jury is final. If any trades are made by members of the Trade Jury, the remaining Jury member(s) will make the judgment (i.e. jury member involved in trade cannot vote).
    2. Not all trades will have action by the Trade Jury, only those deemed questionable by any members.
    3. Trades will proceed according to Yahoo’s waiting period if there are no issues.
  3. No odd player trades will be allowed (i.e. 2 for 1 or 3 for 2). These types of trades require the odd gaining manager to drop a player to maintain correct roster size. This makes judging fairness of a trade very difficult. Further, experience shows that most of these trade offers are rejected.
  4. “Team Need” will not be considered when judging fairness of trades. Fairness will be judged on an absolute basis. Note “Team Need” usually revolves around goaltenders which are a most scarce commodity. As such, goaltender scarcity will factor into trade fairness, but a particular team’s need for goaltending (usually a result of an injury) will not.

Special Circumstances

  1. Player Dumping: This occurs when a manager (usually frustrated) dumps star players or possibly their entire roster to the waiver wire. In the unlikely event this occurs, Commish will freeze the manager and take control of manager’s team. All dumped players will be frozen and not available for pickup. Commish will then add players back to the team they were dumped from and lock out that team from competition for remainder of the season. Manager doing this will forfeit any prizes they were eligible for.
  2. Unintentional Roster Moves: There are rare occasions when a manager “clicks the wrong button” when acting on a trade offer or dropping/adding a player. The league gives managers limited flexibility in recalling these errors:
    1. Erroneous Trade Approval: If a manager erroneously approves a trade they did not wish to, that manager must send an email to the Commish and the trading partner (manager) within 15 minutes of the error. Commish automatically gets an email from yahoo on agreed trades so can easily compare timing of emails. The 15 minute limit is to prevent managers from acting on buyer’s remorse hours later or an injury/player announcement after execution of the trade date.
  3. Hometown Jackass Rule: All Puck Hogs that live within a two hour drive of the officially sanctioned Puckapalooza event are required to attend and drink beer with the fellow Puck Hogs. Failure to do so will result in immediate suspension and removal from the league and forfeiture of all league fees.

I can use IE, but eventually (it can be months down the raod -- I just wanted to point it out) could you see if the formatting options can be made useable in Firefox?

Draft Order Finalized!!!
He have 19 locked in and I've got a few on the hook for the last slot which I'll give to the TBD guy. I did it as promised in the earlier (neverending) thread. I randomized the bottom four finishers NHL style and also randomized the fill of the vacated slots for the newbies (Banditos, TBD, Chiefs, Pine Hill). All randomizing brought to you by the nice folks at random.org. And Hollywood couldn't have scripted it any better for Jimmy who got the #1 pick after all the hard work he's done on the site all summer. But I'm also of the camp that doesn't value any one draft position over another.

Now, some admin: I've heard of at least two people who cannot make the draft time. We know how much that sucks so want to accomodate as many people as possible.

If you cannot make the appointed time (Sat 9/20 at 12pm PDT) then let it be known here what time you would prefer and we'll see if we can adjust it. We wont change it if the new time now means other can't make it but if we can make everyone happy then we will (we are just so goddamn accomodating). And hopefully other slots are even available in yahoo.

Manager Pages: ACTION REQUIRED!!!
Alrighty, Jimmy has posted the avatar upload instructions, pretty simple, I just did it (and Mike C. get's the PHL242 cigar for being the first to do his in the league - just make sure you bring that Cup licker to W'ster happy hour in January).

There are a few things we need EVERYONE (bold caps for effect, no Chiefy, I just can't let it go) to do. Go to your manager page and do the following:

  1. Upload an avatar (see Jimmy's instructions). If you don't I will and you wont like what I'll put for your team (think steaming dog turds, donkey butts, gay porn)
  2. Confirm your Team Name for entire season. You may change your yahoo team name as often as you want, but we want some consistency on the site.
  3. Choose a Team Page headline, look at Jimmy's (Lizards), it's the thing that says "...entertaining the league since 2005". Jimmy, can we update this at our will or do we need to go thru you? Same note as on avatar - do not leave it up to my creativity to think of a headline for you, you will regret it.
  4. Confirm Home Town: this is where you currently live.
  5. Confirm Manager name. If you are anal about privacy just put your first name and last initial.
  6. ALSO (just added this), review your past years team names to confirm how you want to be remembered. If you are Glennybits and don't want to be the Suckfires or Ken's pattysucks, then update that. There might be some typos and such due to our fearless webmaster's late night updates so make those corrections too.
  7. If you see anything else amiss, bring it to the attention of Jimmy and me. We are still tweaking things but we may have overlooked something.

Items 2-5 require Jimmy to do the work (so please email either one of us) so we can get it updated.

IF IT'S NOT DONE BY COB FRIDAY (BEFORE DRAFT) THEN I WILL LET MY CREATIVE JUICES FLOW SO THAT YOU YOU HAVE A STEAMING PILE OF DOG TURD AS AN AVATAR AND SOMETHING LIKE "...TEABAGGING FRIENDS AND FAMILY FOR YEARS" AS YOUR HEADLINE.

Awards suggestion
The awards links are awesome. One suggestion, in addition to the winner of each award, can we add the 'score' that was had in that category? So for my Ron Jeremy award (on the Award page, not the Manager page), it would show my goals for that season (283 for '06 I believe?).

ATTENTION: SCORING SETUP CHANGE: READ
I know draft is only four days away and I apologize if this inconveniences you but...

I did some review of the projected stats for this year and feel the goalie stats are too strong (this has also been McV's crusade so I guess after enough beer at the poolside in Vegas two months ago it finally sank in).

I've made slight alterations in the yahoo scoring to somewhat right the tilt. Probably not enough for you Scotty but it's what we'll go with.

Just so you all know how much I love you, I've spent the last hour modelling and pivoting different setups to come up with what I thought best all after spending all day on the keyboard modelling and pivoting for my day job.

Great Job, Jimmy C!
Jimmy-

I want to publicly recognize you and your hard work getting the SharePoint site up. Much remains to be done and great things are in store. But keep pounding.

I am grateful for your efforts, no matter how much louder than me you snore. (yeah I know it's a non-sequiter, but our standards for some things around here are pretty low).

UTIL/F Slots
Per our off-season set-up discussion, I've changed the set up from 6F/4D to 2F/4UTIL/2D. Yahoo has UTIL max of 5 so I couldn't make all of the F slots UTIL.

This will allow you to put D players in F slots if you have too many of them. Of course, it doesn't work the opposite way, only D can play in D slots. The logic during our discussion was that D should be able to move up but F shouldn't be able to play back which is logical.

Util
Hey Ad, I saw the page updated to change 4 F spots to Util. Maybe you are fiddling with a few temporary things, but I don't see it needed to have the possibilty of 8 Defencemen playing. I know it's not likely to matter, no one with any sense is going to start 8 D-men...but it also makes the team page look real strange....

I think 1 Utility spot (with 5 F and 4 D) is enough...but that's just my 2 cents...whatever you go with is fine with me.

Awards
Was doing some work on the awards page (putting in the totals from each years winner)... when I realized that we have The Bucket for the last man standing, but don't have an award for the Puck Hog with the most points at the end of the PHL242 season... a Presidents Trophy so to say...

Knowing that each award takes away from the overall payout for the bucket holder... is this something we should consider?

It is also a rarity for the #1 seed to take the bucket... so it is a little recognition for leading the rabble most of the year.

Just thinking...

Team Jussi: You're fired
First on the chopping block for next year is Team Jussi: 2 weeks and he's still sporting the cover of Playgirl magazine. Pathetic. Speaking of avatars, Ralphy, you're wish for me to get virused and wurmed preceded my HD crash by about a week. Are you dialed in with someone powerful upstairs? I fear you.

Pre-season Drop/Add Cutoff
Season starts tomorrow with the EU games. I'll be resetting all drop/adds to zero at 4pm PDT today. I'd do it later but I now have a 30lb brick on my desktop that wont go home with me.

Good luck all
